Colonic Irrigation or Colon hydrotherapy as it is also called has been under a great deal of scrutiny by would-be health whistle blowers. It is a complete and utter shame that the media has sunk to this level. I watch as they spew ill researched articles filled with obscure hearsay claiming that there are great dangers posed to individuals that may seek this treatment out. Obesity is a literal epidemic within the US and UK. Diabetes, food poisonings, and long term health effects of our corporate manufactured foods aren’t even known. Yet the media seeks out colon hydrotherapy as worth of deep investigation for possible health issues. I hope that after reading my article you are able to get at the very least a better grasp on what the real story is behind what it is all about to get a colon cleanse. As I have stated before, there are really two types of colonics: a nutritive colonic, of which I am a great advocate, and a colon irrigation. A nutritive colonic involves using nutrients and specific balances of foods in order to flush your system completely of waste. We will of course discuss nutritive colonics in more depth in the future, but for now let us look at colon hydrotherapy.

Colon hydrotherapy’s greatest flaw is the embarrassment factor involved. There is no need to mince words, it involves someone inserting a wand into rectum and in essence plunging the waste out. The procedure is not without discomfort, however, not as much as you might think. For the most part, these individuals read a magazine or watch tv while the technician does the dirty work. The irrigation generally takes less than an hour, and the client is sent home, sometimes with nutritive supplements to maintain the newly clean environment. Now I will simply give you my opinion on this. No, you can search on the internet all day long, and maybe come up with a study or two that says cleaning out one’s colon can provide you health benefits. Alternatively, you will find dozens of articles that will warn you of dangers associated with colon hydrotherapy. What I do know, people that have had it know full well that it was a cleansing experience. There is no way in my opinion, that carrying accumulated gunk in your body for decades can help your health. It simply makes no sense to think that removing hardened fecal matter from your body can do you great harm in the hands of a skilled technician. However, there are things to keep in mind, things that we continue to discuss here. One of those things is your probiotic environment in your gut, the other is choosing a skilled colonic technician. These are two things we will cover in the future posts.

The French Paradox is one of the many diet phenomenons that have taken hold of would-be dieters in hopes that if they simply eat like the French, they would of course share in their purported benefits: low coronary disease rate, and low incidence of obesity. This formula has been replicated multiple times including with the Japanese diet, and the Mediterranean diet. There is much science to the factors of eating many of the healthful foods from these regions. However, one item that is not covered in depth is the healthy environment of gut flora as well as an atypical intake of rich raw foods. One example of this would be the use of raw milk cheeses. In nearly every country outside of the United States and the UK, raw milk is a staple in the making of cheese. Pasteurization and of course, homogenization, are of course processes in which our fresh raw milk is processed in order to make it safer for our consumption. The main reason this is in place is due to the massive amounts of milk that our dairies produce. The cows of the US and UK have been through a lot to say the least. They’re genetics have been toyed with for a very long period of time. The fact of the matter is, cows are far less able to protect themselves from disease than they were even fifty years ago. They are now wholly reliant on human intervention in keeping them healthy. This of course, lends itself to the taste and healthfulness of their milk. I defy anyone, anyone to taste raw milk and tell me that it tastes the same as our watered down white mess. It is absurd that the freshness and quality has been scared away by the mere possibility that disease might occur. However, this is another story altogether. What I really wanted to focus on was the fact that these raw milks, are wonderfully rich in natural bacteria that is good for us. These bacteria stay alive in their wonderful cheeses, butters, and yogurts and of course find their way into our stomachs naturally and healthfully. No probiotic supplement can do this for us. Due to the higher populations of these bacteria, their colons become far superior to ours in digesting lactose, animal fats, and other not so wonderful processed foods (which of course they eat far less of than most Americans). This consistent level of microflora allow their guts to get rid of sticky gums like corn syrups from attaching themselves permanently to the colonic walls. Residual waste is reduced and nearly eliminated by this fact alone. Add in their level of diet and exercise, and you can begin to see how their overall health is enhanced many times over.

Imagine, if you will, a great hallway, freshly painted and without clutter. You are able to walk through it with ease, nothing impedes your movement. Now imagine someone puts a pile of old newspapers on the side of the hall. You are still able to pass with ease, yet you do have to take care of that pile. Then useless cardboard boxes are thrown into the hallway, old toys, random garbage begins to gather, the piles of newspaper get so high that you have to squeeze through and it becomes stressful to pass through it. And as you carefully step over those items that you should have thrown out years ago, you start to wonder, “how did this get so bad?”

This is the closest representation to our colon that I can think of. When we are born, our colons are pristine, lacking even the good bacteria that we will need to have for optimal health and nourishment. As years go by, and our bad dietary habits take effect, the layers of waste begin to accumulate in the colon. Years of gummy buildup from corn syrup, sugars, starches, white bleached flour, preservatives, these are all colon culprits. They remain sticking to the colonic walls, disturbingly resilient and long lasting. Resilient and long lasting are things you would seek in a car, in a screwdriver, but not in foods. Did you know that researchers discovered that store bought white bread can be some of the stickiest items for your colon to pass, taking up to FOUR times longer than whole grain breads? And this is our main problem being faced today primarily in the USA and the UK. There has been such a focus on creating foods that have long shelf life, far longer than necessary, and unfortunately for our bodies, these chemicals are very effective. White bread, such as Wonderbread is an easy target, and has had years of abuse at the hands of the Atkins diet already, however, a naturally made piece of bread would not, and should not last for a month or more on a store shelf. These perishable foods have become wax statues, essentially clay made of corn syrup, bleached flour, and glutens. These methods are not old by any means. The advances in keeping food preserved has been ongoing throughout our history, but only in recent history, since World War II, have we made these tremendous leaps of shelf life in terms of food. What was borne of necessity, unfortunately, has been adapted as our day to day food regimen. In my next post, we will look at why this is far from the healthiest form of nourishment that we can experience, and what the French do differently that lends to explaining the “French Paradox.”

We all know someone, someone who has a weak stomach. You know the guy, he’s the one that has to pop two Lactaids before putting a teaspoon of milk in their coffee. Or the person that would have the worst gas imaginable after eating a side salad. You might be that someone, and it is both difficult and at times, embarassing. But it does not have to be that way. Of course there are a great many individuals that are affected by an easily irritable stomach or a food that can cause a variety of stomach woes. However, many of the smaller hindrances to digestion can be remedied by nutritive measures having to do with your colon. One benefit of colonics, as previously mentioned is the balancing of microflora in the gut. These good bacteria thrive on some of our most difficult to digest foods such as red meats, vegetables, and dairy. A nutritive colonic allows us to recalibrate the population of these bacteria in our colon and aid in reducing gas, bloat, and YES even reducing belly bulge. This is important to consider in terms of understanding the overall health benefits of a internal colon cleanse. Unlike a colonic hydrotherapy, this is a way of not only internally ridding yourself of waste materials but it also actively repopulates the gut with good bacteria.

There are a great number of benefits of colonics, many of which have an affect on your outward appearance and internal functioning. The first of these that we should talk about is the probiotic environment of your gut. Your stomach is a very complex place. Think about it, fifty thousand years ago, we were living huddled together in caves for warmth, eating anything that we were lucky enough to have at hand. This included meats of varying degrees of rawness, grains, and any fruits or vegetables that our ancestors were brave enough to try. Our stomachs were the true test tubes of what human beings began to respond to all those many thousands of years ago. Over time, our stomachs became adept at rejecting foods that may harm us, and accepting and making the most of those foods that would nourish us. This is how we began our relationship with the delicate ecosystem that began building in our colons. YES, there are living creatures inside you right now, and that is a GREAT thing for the most part, as long as they are the good bacteria known as probiotics. These helpful bacteria aid in your overall good health and appearance.
